Tiddly winners - design prize for pupils who put new spin on game

Slick Shooters: Olutobi Lawal, Jason Campbell and Ali Esayed play the game
10 April 2012

A modern version of tiddlywinks created by pupils from Walworth Academy in Southwark has won a competition run by the Design Museum at Shad Thames.

The students will now work with designers to develop the game, Slick Shooter, and it will eventually go on sale in the museum's shop.

They beat projects from more than 30 London schools and the victory was particularly sweet for their teacher, Atam Sandhu, who gave up his career as managing director of a design company for teaching only a year ago.

He said the Design Ventura competition, which included expert advice on finance, marketing and design, was a boost to the students on the GCSE product design course.

Naomi Cleaver, a judge and consultant, said the game was "neat, perfect and cheekily playful".

One of the shortlisted projects was a phone case with Oyster card holder developed by the Sacred Heart school in Hammersmith.
