A tiny puppy discovered in a south London park with two broken legs may have been cruelly dumped there in a shoebox, an animal charity has revealed.

The terrier cross had apparently been abandoned in South Norwood Lake and Grounds, Croydon, and was unable to walk properly, the RSPCA said.

“Dumping a dog in such a poorly state was a callous and cruel thing to do,” said RSPCA officer Kirstie Gillard.

The pup, now nicknamed Bambi, was found on November 17 by a kind-hearted passer-by and taken to Putney Animal Hospital, where she was treated by veterinary nurses.

“She was found by the footpath right next to a shoebox, which I think she might have been dumped in,” Ms Gillard added.

“We don’t know how she broke her legs.

“It may have been a road accident or she may have been a victim of abuse.

“Perhaps she was dumped by an owner who could not afford to pay vet fees to treat her.”

Vet David Mills said Bambi was now on the mend.

“We have successfully repaired both of Bambi’s legs and she is now doing well, and using both front legs,” he said.

“She’s a lovely, friendly puppy and is due to go into a foster home to recover before being rehomed.”

Anyone with information about her abandonment is asked to call the charity on 0300 123 8018.
