Top nightclub promoter Roger Michael puts name on list for Sadiq Khan's night czar role

A top London nightlife promoter has thrown his hat in the ring to be the capital’s first “night czar”.

Roger Michael, who has run A-list events at clubs including Boujis, said he wants to champion London’s cultural values in the role, which has been advertised by Mayor Sadiq Khan to promote and support the night-time economy.

He said he was a skilled negotiator who could build trust between clubbers, residents and councillors after controversies such as the closure of Farringdon club Fabric, following the deaths of two teenagers from suspected drugs overdoses.

Mr Michael said: “I want to build a vision that will make London the foremost 24-hour city in the world. It has the potential to grow further, in a responsible, scalable and profitable manner — for both businesses and the people that make it all work.”

This would involve “breaking down red tape and barriers to create new proactive initiatives”.

He said he wanted the job because “I’ve always loved the culture”, and added: “I started my nightlife marketing and communications career in the late Eighties during the year of the ‘summer of love’ when Britain’s youth was intensely gripped by an ever-growing, explosive culture.

“Since then I have seen London’s nightlife scene grow, and the world become more interconnected, with musicians, DJs, and revellers from all over the world coming to London.”
