Travellers dumped tonnes of rubbish and left it to rot in playing fields across south London.

The mounds of building waste have been lying in Ashburton Playing Fields, Croydon, for just under a week after the group were evicted from the site by Croydon Council.

There were further instances of fly-tipping around the corner earlier this month in Purley Way Playing Fields, also thought to be dumped by travellers.

Images of the mess were taken by Councillor Sean Fitzsimons who said he spotted the fly-tipping while out on a run.

Labour councillor Andrew Rendle said: “Officers have been excellent in the traveller’s eviction and know the scale of the fly-tipping.

“We will be trying to link the fly-tipping to individuals, who could get FPNs (fixed penalty notices) or be prosecuted.”

The travellers were first evicted from Purley Way Playing Fields on August 11 before moving on to other green spaces in the borough.

A clean-up operation is currently underway and expected to cost the council thousands of pounds.
