Tributes to Arsenal fan Ernie Crouch who died after being blown into a bus on his way to match

Tributes have been paid to a lifelong Arsenal fan who died in a freak accident on the way to a match.

Ernie Crouch, 90, died when a gust of wind crashed him against the side of a bus during stormy weather in north London on Saturday.

The devoted Arsenal fan was travelling to the Emirates Stadium to watch his side's match with Sunderland when the accident happened in Finchley.

Fans today paid tribute to the pensioner, who was described as a "fantastic, loyal supporter".

Arsenal's official Twitter account posted: "Everyone at Arsenal Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of lifelong fan Ernie Crouch. May he rest in peace".

Arsenal fan Piers Morgan called for players to wear black armbands during their next game in recognition of Mr Crouch's devotion to the club.

He tweeted: "RIP Ernie Crouch. Followed Arsenal for 80yrs.Died yesterday when high winds blew him into a bus on way to game.

"I hope @Arsenal players wear black armbands for Ernie Crouch on Wednesday night. No more loyal Gooner ever."

Arsenal's supporters trust said they would be organising a memorial service for Mr Crouch, adding: "RIP Ernie. Loved Arsenal no matter who was in charge or what position we were, win, lose or draw."

Former Arsenal footballer Jimmy Carter tweeted: "So sad to hear that Ernie Crouch Arsenal fan for 80 years died on his way to the game yesterday. RIP Ernie."

A Met Police spokeswoman said after the incident: “Police were called by London Ambulance Service at 12.35pm to reports of a traffic incident in Chaville Way, N3.

“At the scene, a male pedestrian had been in collision with the side of a moving bus.

"Medics at the scene performed CPR but the man died at the scene at 1.15pm.

“Officers believe they know the identity of the deceased and next of kin have been informed.

“At this early stage, officers believe the man was caught by a gust of wind and blown off the pavement against the side of a moving bus.”
