A swan wandered on to the runway at Heathrow Airport, giving staff the run around as they tried to shoo it away.

Workers can be seen chasing the rogue animal from the tarmac at the west London airport in video footage.

When it refuses to be picked up, the rescue team are forced to return to their car and begin driving after it.

The rescue mission on November 3 led to the runway being closed for nine minutes but did not cause any delays to flights, a spokesperson for Heathrow said.

Once it was finally captured, the bird was taken to the airport's on site animal centre by Heathrow’s bird hazard management team.

YouTube users appeared amused by the chase after footage of it was posted online.

One person said: "They were in a bit of a flap there."

Another user simply wrote: "This video made my day, hilarious."

A spokesman for Heathrow said no flights were delayed by the incident, despite reports online.

He said birds on the runway were a safety hazard because they can cause problems if they become caught in aircraft engines.

He said: "Heathrow’s bird hazard management team responded quickly and safely removed the swan to reopen the runway.

"Once rescued, the swan was taken to our animal reception centre to be properly looked after by the onsite team."
