'Warn of dangers': partner of dead cyclist in plea to politicians

Risks of the road: cyclists in heavy London traffic.
Simon Freeman20 March 2012

The partner of a hospital finance worker crushed to death by a lorry attacked politicians today who “seek the green vote” by promoting cycling but do not warn about the dangers.

Mother-of-two Nga Diep, 33, had taken up cycling only a month before she was killed on her way to work at Guy’s and St Thomas’ in March 2008. She was trapped between a lorry and railings as it turned left, then dragged beneath the wheels of the truck.

The driver, Leon Weaver of Lewisham-based Economic Skips, was cleared of careless driving. Ms Diep was mother to two sons, now aged 14 and six. Today, after a judge awarded her family £385,000 compensation, Dan Nguyen, 40, an IT worker from Brockley, said: “You see lots of posters saying how it’s good to cycle, but there’s nowhere near as many warning of the hazards and reminding people to take care. London is a living, breathing city, not a cycle park.

“Successive policy makers and mayors have said people should cycle more but they seem to do very little to educate road users on the risks.”
