22 December 2012

A woman was killed at a bus stop after being hit by a car which 10 minutes earlier had driven off following a crash with another vehicle, police said today. The victim, believed to be in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene on Streatham High Road, south London, at 5.30am today.

Two men were also left in a critical condition.

The first incident happened at 5.20am when two cars, an Audi and a Volkswagen, crashed in London Road, Croydon at the junction with Ederline Avenue.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Following the collision there was an altercation involving a number of men.

"Plain clothes officers, who had been on duty nearby, identified themselves as police officers. Upon the intervention of police a number of men made off from the scene in the Audi."

One man was taken to hospital for treatment. It is not known whether his injuries were sustained in the crash or the subsequent altercation.

Just 10 minutes later the Audi hit two people at a bus stop in Streatham, killing a woman and leaving a man critically injured.

Scotland Yard said the occupants of the car made off before the police arrived. No arrests have been made.

The damaged Audi was abandoned at the scene.
