A woman was killed in a hit-and-run while she was thought to be protecting an elderly man on a disability scooter from being struck.

The woman, believed to be in her 60s, collided with the black Range Rover close to a roundabout in Abbey Wood, south east London, at 11am yesterday.

Police said the driver of the car bolted away on foot shortly after the accident. The car, which had no licence plates, was abandoned at the scene.

A post-mortem has been scheduled for June 23 for formal identification. Next of kin are aware.

No arrests have yet been made.

Detective Sergeant Richard Budd said: “I am keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed this tragic accident. We are in the early stages of this investigation and we are still trying to work out the events that led to this incident.

“It appears the victim had been walking with an elderly gentlemen and that she may have tried to prevent him being hit but was knocked down in the process. The gentlemen did not sustain any injuries and did not require hospital treatment.”

A spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said: “We sent a single responder in a car an ambulance crew and two duty officers to the scene. London’s Air Ambulance also attended.

“Sadly a woman was pronounced dead at the scene by the doctor from the air ambulance.”

Anyone with any information can call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0208 285 1574 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
