Zac Goldsmith has pledged to restore and protect London’s war memorials in the run-up to the centenary of the end of the First World War.

The Tory mayoral candidate plans to lobby the Chancellor to help set up a fund to make sure the monuments are a lasting tribute to the fallen.

There are around 8,000 war memorials across London.

Mr Goldsmith said: “I want to make sure our memorials and monuments are in the best possible condition so they can remain a fitting tribute to the fallen and help bring communities together today.”

The Tory MP would work with local and national charities including the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, English Heritage, the Royal British Legion and the War Memorials Trust to restore and protect the memorials.
