A booking for Mrs Amazon

14 June 2013

Last night Sir Evelyn de Rothschild threw a party for MacKenzie Bezos author of the novel Traps, at Sotheran’s, the oldest antiquarian bookshop in London, off Piccadilly. Never heard of her? She’s the wife of Jeff Bezos, boss of Amazon.

Lord Heseltine, Jackie Stewart, Frederic Forsyth and Sir Vidia and Lady Naipaul were there to hear Mrs Bezos read from her book and meet her all-powerful husband, who was wearing a suit for the first time any of his friends could remember. “It’s great to be here,” Bezos told me. “You can have a better party in a shop. The wine’s not so good in cyberspace.” Is Mrs Bezos’s book on Amazon? “You’ll have to look that up,” he said. “I don’t know.”
