Delivering a lecture on the late Roy Jenkins this week, Vernon Bogdanor related an exchange between the ex-Home Secretary and John Major.

“Do you ever regret not being prime minister?” asked Major tactfully. “Do you ever regret becoming PM?” riposted Jenkins.
