A master mind tastes rare defeat

Shaun Wallace, barrister, former Mastermind winner and the “Dark Destroyer” on ITV quiz show The Chase, was at the Prince of Wales in Highgate last night to sharpen his brain. The pub’s quiz night has been deemed Britain’s “most respected” by the Daily Telegraph and is even the subject of a 2006 book.

But Wallace and his team-mates were no match for a local team led by Observer writer and former Review editor Tim Adams, who pipped them to the post. Given that Adams’s team had never before been placed higher than seventh, a recount was demanded — but the results stood.
