There hasn’t been a more perfectly British moment since James Bond went parachuting with the Queen. Benedict Cumberbatch was honourable, upright and true at St James’ Palace last night, where he joined Prince Philip in presenting Duke of Edinburgh gold awards to 85 adventurers.

“I probably would have done the DofE if I’d known Cumberbatch would present them,” tweeted one fan, before conceding: “Well, I would have tried.”
