Thwump! A script unexpectedly lands on The Londoner’s desk. What’s this? Only an early draft of Michael Winterbottom’s The Face of an Angel, complete with all the delicious details of what Cara Delevingne is getting up to in the Tuscany-based thriller.

The model-turned-actress has a busy year ahead: she’ll soon be a mermaid in Joe Wright’s Pan, a 17th-century artist’s model in Tulip Fever and — according to the latest rumours — be revealing her singing talents in a Beach Boys musical. But flicking through the script, it looks like it’s the spliff-smoking, Dante-quoting, romantic waitress she plays in Winterbottom’s film which could be her breakthrough role.

The controversial movie, which premieres at the Toronto Film Festival next month, was inspired by the disturbing events of the Meredith Kercher case. “Make a fiction. You can’t tell the truth unless you make a fiction,” says one character with leaden subtlety.

Cara’s part has been downplayed in the promotional material — she was absent from the trailer released this spring — but judging from the script she’s set to steal the show. Winterbottom certainly seems set on making the most of her cover-girl looks: when Cara’s character meets the film’s hero — an investigative director played by Daniel Brühl — he sees “the sodium lights catching her hair, turning it a strawberry blonde, her long legs slightly apart, her short skirt blowing in the wind.” So, basically a movie version of her last DKNY campaign.

She later takes him to wild parties, arranges for a supply of Class A drugs yet still finds the time to sweetly explain that “all the best films are love stories.” Do you think they’d fit all the letters of “Delevingne” on an Oscar statuette?
