It's a friendship made in heaven. Clare Balding has given the Archbishop of Canterbury her blessing after sitting next to him at the annual dinner of the Association of Corporate Treasurers at Mayfair’s Grosvenor House hotel.

“He was fabulous company and gave a great speech about the importance of character,” tweeted Balding. “As dinner came to a close he asked if he could drink my coffee (I hadn’t touched it). Of course I said yes and he gulped it in one go. ‘Good,’ the Archbishop said, ‘that’ll keep me awake’.”

Luckily, the presenter is well versed in the Christian virtue of forgiveness and quickly absolved the Archbishop of his faux pas. “The good news is that he has a brilliant sense of humour. I ribbed him mercilessly and didn’t let him nod off.”
