Jeremy Clarkson arrived on his pushbike at Daunt Books in Holland Park last night to hear theatre critic Robert Gore-Langton talk about his book on RC Sherriff, the insurance clerk turned infantryman whose experience in the First World War trenches became the classic war play Journey’s End.

Clarkson, who must have been having a midlife crisis in May when he bought the bike, risked life and limb to get to the launch.

“Smoking and cycling is bloody dangerous because I’ve got only one hand for the brakes,” he said. “I’m much too scared of Shepherd’s Bush roundabout.”
