Currying favour for “Plebgate” Andrew Mitchell

3 October 2013

Poppadoms all round. Tory MP Andrew Mitchell has just been cleared to take up a new job as a senior adviser to East End Foods, an Indian food company. Mitchell, who has developed a lucrative portfolio of ex-parliamentary posts since quitting as Chief Whip last year amid the still unresolved Plebgate row, has been given permission by the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments to commit four days a year to the role.

On the infamous day of his encounter with police officers in Downing Street in September 2012, Mitchell had eaten lunch at the Cinnamon Club, one of London’s smartest curry houses. A few hours later he was accused of calling the officers “plebs”, a word he denies having used.

It is good to know that even painful memories of the incident have not put Mitchell off curry for life.
