Former health minister Edwina Currie has learned a lot about diets since she resigned from Margaret Thatcher’s government in 1988 after her remarks about salmonella in eggs.

“I was 9 stone 7lb in those days but recently my weight went up to 12 stone,” she tells me from her home in the Peak District. “Now I’m down to 10 stone 2lb. Some people may have seen me on the quiz show Pointless at the weekend and I want to assure them it was recorded in July and I’ve lost a lot of weight since then.

“I first tried Weightwatchers 35 years ago. Every so often they change the formula and I’m glad they now say you can eat all the fruit you like. If you write down everything that passes your lips and weigh it first, it makes you think twice before eating. You eat broccoli instead of sweetcorn, an apple instead of a cake. It’s much better psychology. It’s impossible to get hungry on this diet. ”
