Defence: Gabby Logan said she invested 'in good faith'

Even BBC presenter Gabby Logan has given John Inverdale short shrift for his comment that Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli was “never going to be a looker”. Logan, who will replace Inverdale as the BBC’s “face of athletics”, tells me: “He will have seen from the reaction that it wasn’t appropriate.” However, she adds in his defence: “John’s a good broadcaster. I don’t think anybody deserves to be hung out to dry over just one comment.”

Logan is set to present I Love My Country, a BBC1 Saturday night celebrity quiz show. Her elevation follows that of Clare Balding, who also moved from sports anchor to BBC1 Saturday entertainment host. So why are the BBC’s sporting ladies taking over prime-time?

“We’re used to working without Autocue and have to deal with constant streams of information flooding in,” says Logan.
