To those who said Lady Thatcher didn’t have a sense of humour comes a counterclaim. “I remember an EU meeting, and briefing her on the draft conclusions, which included a long ‘Declaration on Xenophobia ’,” recalls one civil servant. “‘What is xenophobia?’ she asked, crossly. ‘It’s inveterate hatred of foreigners, PM.’ ‘Oh well, that’s alright then,’ she said and grinned.”
