Game of Thrones’ George RR Martin — the novelist whose Song of Fire and Ice series inspired the TV phenomenon — held court at Harper Voyager’s summer party at the Gherkin last night. The Londoner asked the bestselling author if he thought that today’s politicians could learn a few tricks from his Machiavellian characters.

“I hope the books encourage people to question authority,” Martin told me. “Because power is a construct — it’s all in the mind. A few hundred years ago a king could say ‘Chop off that guy’s head’ and they’d do it. If Queen Elizabeth 1 said that now, no one would listen.”
