Up with the middle-classes, says June Whitfield. After the BBC Trust said too much of the Corporation’s output was “middle-class”, the veteran actress — star of Terry and June and Absolutely Fabulous — hit back.

“It’s ridiculous to attack on the grounds of something being middle-class,” says Whitfield, who plays a lead in Boomers, the new comedy about well-heeled retirees. “So many folk are middle-class. And no one says this or that programme is too working-class or upper-class.” Not to mention the BBC’s ratings might collapse without it.
