Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves was so chuffed with her trip to New York yesterday to meet business leaders that she put a snap of her British Airways ticket on Twitter.

What a mistake that was. It showed her seat number, which indicated that she had chosen to sit in the business class section of the plane. Business class tickets from London to New York usually start at around £2,000 and can rise steeply for last minute bookings.

Things took a strange twist. The tweet with the photograph showing Reeves’s seat number was hastily deleted and replaced with an almost identical tweet in which the photo had been edited. The seat number was blurred out.

A few eagle-eyed Twitter users noted the amendment. Soon after, the new tweet disappeared too, leaving little trace of Reeves’s jolly to the Big Apple.

How mysterious. Is she keen to keep her reputation for frugality?
