Left and Right like goulash

If you think the “Goulash Co-operative”, formed to make a bid for the Gay Hussar restaurant in Soho, is only for Lefties, think again. Tory blogger and publisher Iain Dale has announced he has acquired a £500 share in the venture, while former Tory MP Neil Hamilton and his wife Christine have also pledged to stump up £500 each.

It won’t be enough to secure a “personalised brass plaque” in the new place, as those are offered only to “those prepared to sponsor individual banquettes at a cost of £2,000”.

Dale and the Hamiltons are strange bedfellows for Labour MP Tom Watson, who is chairing the Goulash committee. Watson has personally written to all staff and regulars of the Gay Hussar inviting them to help raise £200,000. For those with more than £50,000 to invest, “each dining room will be named in perpetuity after customers,” says Watson.
