Clever retailers are using the Coronation to flog a range of wares. Conway Stewart has a sterling silver pen on sale for £575. It has a detailed profile of the royal engraved on it.

The item might appeal to Charles himself: he famously asked aides to move his pen during an accession ceremony last year, and struggled with another leaky pen while signing a visitors book a few days later.

Meanwhile, Historic Royal Palaces, the charity which runs Kensington Palace and the Tower of London, properties owned by The Crown Estate, is selling a £35 hanging decoration, amongst other items.

Others are selling items too. Potter Emma Bridgewater has a mug for £23 which says King Charles on it. Fortnum & Mason, a shop favoured by the royals, has a “trinkets box” on sale for £60.

Some in the family will cash in too: Carole Middleton, mother of the Duchess of Cambridge, is selling items through her Party Pieces company, including flag bunting. It costs £4.99 for three metres.
