Londoner's Diary: Dancing with the stars at the Bafta after party

A menagerie of international film stars popped in to the Royal Albert Hall last night, where Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Dev Patel won big at the BAFTAs. But it was uber producer Harvey Weinstein’s post-ceremony party at Holborn’s Rosewood Hotel that proved to be the real hot ticket.

Riot Club actress Holliday Grainger (left with Felicity Jones) teased her next project, an adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s tale of suspicion and sex My Cousin Rachel. “I only knew her work through Hitchcock,” she said. “When I got the role I obviously read the book, as well as Frenchman’s Creek, which I loved. And I get to work with Rachel Weisz, who is lovely. So down to earth and easy to get along with.”

The Londoner warmed up again with a Grey Goose Le Fizz and a turn about the lit-up dance floor, where new bonds were being forged. Arrival’s Amy Adams waged a dance off to Gnarls Barkley against Rogue One’s Felicity Jones (above) - a battle of the galactic heroines - before Aaron and Sam Taylor Johnson showed them how it was done. French doyenne of drama Isabelle Huppert was thick as thieves with Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’s Noomi Rapace, while Rising Star Award winner Tom Holland, the newest Spider-Man, proved inseparable from striking young actress Ella Purnell. A new screen pairing on the way, perhaps.

In the corner we spotted Alan Yentob (left), catching up with friends and looking dapper. Alas, he chose not to wear his much-loved check pyjamas trousers. They have made him stick out during parties on yachts in Cannes, and the Calais jungle, but last night they would have fitted right in: the waiters wore identical checked trews. Although perhaps Alan would not have appreciated being confused for staff.

But honourable mention to Laura Whitmore. The TV presenter had been duty all day, hosting segments from the red carpet. But being surrounded by stars had affirmed her recent career change - she is currently appearing in Peter James play Not Dead Enough. “I wouldn’t even compare myself to the talented people in this room,” she said. “There’s so much negativity in the world that even a film with a sad story is a release. I’m just taking my baby steps, but Michelle Williams is one of my favourite actresses, and I love Denise Gough.” Watch this space.

Til next year...
