The Londoner hears that the BBC is primed for a royal announcement. Rumours are flying around town that the engagement of Prince Harry and his girlfriend Meghan Markle is imminent, possibly even in the next few hours. Markle, pictured, has been increasingly seen around town — she has a new Volkswagen for spinning around the capital and her dogs are set to arrive in London from her home in Toronto.

The couple met in 2016 and have since enjoyed a whirlwind romance. And last week it was announced that Markle would no longer be appearing in Suits, the TV legal drama that made her famous. The Londoner contacted Kensington Palace today but it would not comment on the matter.Prince Harry was last photographed on Monday going to a 70th wedding anniversary dinner for the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

If the engagement is to be announced it will be an extraordinary moment in history as the royal family continues to step away from the tradition of just marrying aristocracy, after Prince William decided to marry Kate Middleton.

It’s not the first time a royal has married an American , of course — King Edward VIII famously had to abdicate after he married twice divorced Wallis Simpson.
