Lowry, man of Marmite and matchsticks

The first review of the reviews of the new Lowry exhibition at the Tate Britain comes from dear old Jeffrey Archer. “It’s ridiculous for the critics to give Lowry [the mid-20th-century painter of industrial life populated by matchstick men] at the Tate three stars — he’s like Marmite: you either like him or you don’t,” says Archer, novelist, politician and Renaissance man.

The Times gave three stars to the Lowry exhibition, the Telegraph four while the Guardian is too sophisticated for stars. But what about Lord Archer? Does he rate Lowry? “I do,” he says.
