Marina Abramovic's first day out of The Serpentine

Marina Abramovic, self-proclaimed “grandmother of performance art,” was allowed out of her immersive exhibition at The Serpentine to go to the Illy café on Regent Street — she designs their coffee cups. “It’s been hard,” she explained, “because I’m not in London. I’m in the Serpentine. This is my first day out.” Appreciation was thin on the ground among the coffee-sippers. During a Q&A, the compere asked the Illy audience to raise their hands if they’d been to the Serpentine show. None rose.
