Memories of teen spirit in Chelsea

Jane Birkin, who is due back in concert at the Cadogan Hall in January, has long resided in Paris. Town magazine asked her what she felt about London, and the responses would give a Freudian analyst a field day.

“My most powerful memories of London are of being a teenager, my dad saying I was dressed like a tart and that I would run into trouble at the Chelsea Potter pub; the attendant at Chelsea public baths ordering me to wear a bikini top aged 14, even though I was flat-chested; my mother taking me to Peter Jones to buy a bra to ‘encourage growth’,” the actress tells the magazine.
