No escape from Russian reality in St Tropez

The Londoner knew the Russians were taking over the Côte d’Azur but didn’t know they were bringing their politics with them.

Russian lovelies roasting on St Tropez’s beaches at the weekend were startled to see a plane towing a banner proclaiming in Cyrillic za Navalnovo, meaning “for Navalny”. Opposition leader Alexei Navalny is competing against Vladimir Putin’s candidate for Mayor of Moscow while his appeal against a five-year prison sentence is being heard.

His St Tropez supporters will have been relieved to hear that their hero has been released following a brief detention.
