Labour MP Ed Balls’s only choice in the New Statesman Books of the Year round-up is The Vietnamese Market Cookbook.

He starts his contribution by asking if “fusion cuisine is the new nouvelle cuisine, a fad that’s bound to fade”, although the culinary consensus is that fusion took shape in the Seventies.
