Now Sir Richard Branson is to spend more time in Necker (which has an income tax rate of zero although he denies he’s a tax exile), what of his new role as president of the Old Stoic Society?

“He spends most of his time on Necker and the tax exile story comes as no surprise,” Stowe headmaster Dr Anthony Wallersteiner tells me. “Fortunately, the presidency of the OS Society and an individual’s contributions to HMRC are not linked.”

Stowe held the final stage of its 90th birthday celebrations at the Park Lane Hotel on Saturday. “It included a turn by a burlesque dancer called Dita Von Teese — not an old Stoic,” says Wallersteiner.
