Lord (Richard) Harries, former Bishop of Oxford, still wears episcopal purple and a dog collar, even though he has long retired. Harries spoke in this week’s gay marriage debate in Parliament but the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey, sitting nearby, wore a lounge suit with no hint of clerical garb.

Next to Harries sat another former top cleric, Northern Ireland’s Lord Eames, also minus dog collar or cross. Is Harries finding it hard to let go?
