Repeat after the minister: press regulation, press regulation

22 November 2012

An anonymous Conservative MP has passed to the Londoner a set of points he was "encouraged" to raise with Culture Secretary Maria Miller during this morning’s Culture, Media and Sport parliamentary questions session.

Suggesting that statutory press regulation is on the cards, the planted questions included: “Does my right honourable friend agree with me that we must remember there are fundamental weaknesses in the current model of self-regulation and that the status quo cannot be maintained?”

The source says: “This list of questions was widely circulated by Miller’s parliamentary private secretary Mary Macleod yesterday afternoon among Tory MPs and its tone is deeply worrying.

"Judging by the questions, I think the Government must now know that press regulation is about to happen. It seems to be a case of when, not if."

Needless to say, the source wishes to remain anonymous.
