The campaign to put a dollop of Pesto on top of the BBC gathers pace. After a Facebook campaign began yesterday to install BBC business editor Robert Peston as the next DG, Ladbrokes has posted odds on him of 16/1, putting him level with outgoing Pearson boss Dame Marjorie Scardino.

Ofcom’s Ed Richards remains the favourite at 13/8. “We’ve been caught out by social media campaigns in the past so we won’t take any chances with Peston’s odds,” says a spokesman. Lionel Barber, editor of the FT, was the pink horse candidate last time, and is quoted at 40-1. If it were the Grand National, you might be tempted to put a quid on him too.
