Russia woos world in song

2 April 2014

The crisis between Russia and Ukraine continues to rage but the two countries will soon have to square off in a different arena — the Eurovision Song Contest.

Participating musicians have always been vetted to avoid political statements — in 2009 Georgia’s entry was disqualified for its anti-Putin tune — but is Russia attempting a more subtle message? It will be represented by former child stars The Tolmachevy Sisters and their song Shine.

The lyrics of the upbeat folky number go like this: “Living on the edge/ closer to the crime/ cross the line a step at a time/ Now maybe there’s a place/ maybe there’s a time/ maybe there’s a day you’ll be mine.”

Nul points.
