Star role slips Bill Nighy’s mind

Bill Nighy might have a cult-like following, but don’t expect the much-loved actor to start penning his memoirs any time soon.

Nighy is about to star opposite Carey Mulligan in the West End production of David Hare’s Skylight — a part he originally tore up the stage with in 1997. So when the Londoner ran into him last week at the BFI, we asked him what it was like to return to the role after 17 years.

“Honestly, I’ve got a memory like a goldfish,” laughed Nighy, as he stirred his coffee with the arm of his black-rimmed glasses. “I remember things very easily but as soon I don’t need them any more, they vanish. I know I was in the play — there are photos — but I recall almost nothing about it.” Happily, it had a more memorable effect on those lucky enough to see it.
