Norman Parkinson, whose centenary is being celebrated with a National Theatre exhibition and a BBC documentary, was known for his dedication to getting a good shot but his methods were unorthodox.

In an interview with the FT, model Jerry Hall, whose Vogue shoots with the eccentric fashion photographer kick-started her career, recalls a risky trip to the Soviet Union with him. “This was in the mid-Seventies,” she says, “and they were taking our film. Parks was worried they might not develop it right, so he asked me to stuff some down my pants, which I did. Afterwards, he said, ‘Actually, the Russians developed it better than we did here — we needn’t have bothered.’”
