The gospel according to Herriot

12 March 2014

Why turn to Jesus when you could spiritually consult the author of All Creatures Great and Small? The romantic novelist Jenny Colgan says James Herriot is the writer she turns to for all her literary and ethical dilemmas.

“My editors and I have WWJD bracelets, like the Christians wear, but we mean ‘What would James do?’” said Colgan at last night’s Hidden Prologues literary salon at Bloomsbury’s Radisson Blu Edwardian hotel, where she talked about her new book, Little Beach Street Bakery. “Like when Fifty Shades came along and we thought: ‘Would James do this? I don’t think so. The cows would be horrified.’”
