Explorer Col John Blashford-Snell is an animal enthusiast despite having been charged by rhino and elephants in his time as well as being bitten by scorpions and vampire bats. His latest encounter with animals came after a drive from Dorset to Scotland for the autumn banquet of the Keepers of the Quaich, a whisky-toping society.

The organisation’s newsletter reveals that on arrival north of the border, Blashers was “incredulous to find three tiny frogs had hitched a ride on his shoe”. They had clambered on to one of his brogues before he started his trip. Rather than take the frogs home, Blashford-Snell “liberated them into the pond at Gleneagles Hotel”.
