To be, or not to be, in the party

David Cameron recently announced the names of 30 new working peers, 14 of whom will sit on the Tory benches in the Lords. Yet how many of those 14 Tories, who include Sir Anthony Bamford and Times journalist Danny Finkelstein, are members of the party?

“We wouldn’t reveal that kind of information,” says a Conservative Central Office spokesman. “It’s against the Data Protection Act.”

My source says many of them are not card- carrying members, which may give hope to anyone else seeking a Tory peerage who doesn’t want to go through the bother of actually joining the party.
