Tory with a cunning plan to shame our footballers

David Cameron didn’t make it to Brazil in time to cheer on the England team — but could not turning up to football matches be part of a bold new policy? Tory MP David Amess is arguing that anyone feeling frustrated by our boys’ dismal World Cup showing should just stop going to see them play. “It’s absolutely crazy that the players aren’t financially punished for playing badly,” the MP for Southend West tells The Londoner.

“They’re paid so much week-on-week and they’re not getting better — they’re getting worse. In four years we probably won’t even get into the World Cup. It’s a disgrace.

“If people were to start boycotting matches and the Premiership was forced to confront the sight of half- empty stadiums, there would be a sea-change.” Can’t see that policy being as popular as Labour’s owls.
