Call for Carson! The Houghton Revisited exhibition of Walpole Masterpieces from Catherine the Great’s Hermitage in St Petersburg has been a huge success for the Marquess of Cholmondeley, the owner of the house.

The exhibition was recently extended until November. However, the extra few weeks have caused problems in the kitchens. Visitors who went to Houghton Hall, near King’s Lynn in Norfolk, last week have received a polite apology .

“We would like to apologise to any visitors to Houghton during the week of October 2-6. We were severely let down by new caterers (who have since left), and neither the service nor the quality of the food could be considered up to our usual standard. In any case, we hope this will not put you off visiting Houghton in the future, and we look forward to welcoming you back. Sincerely, David and Rose Cholmondeley.” Were the scones inappropriate? “It was just a blip,” says a spokesman. “The caterers hardly hit the ground before they were gone.” Downton’s loyal butler, would not be amused.
