Trust Elizabeth Hurley to steal the show

“You are most powerful when you are most silent. People never expect silence. They expect words, motion, defence, offence, back and forth ... Silence? No.” So tweeted Elizabeth Hurley yesterday, a reference to false rumours about a fling with Bill Clinton. Then she appeared at last night’s Portrait Gala at the National Portrait Gallery, upstaging star guest the Duchess of Cambridge.

Hurley was powerfully silent but the Londoner wore her down with compliments about her outfit. She talked us through her ensemble: “The dress is Amanda Wakeley, the bag is Aspinal and the stole is Versace.” And the shoes? “I don’t know, sorry!,” says a woman who probably has too many to recall them all.

Attempting another pass, the Londoner admitted a soft spot for Bedazzled, in which Hurley is Satan in a red leather trouser suit. Relieved to be reminded of her acting career, she gave a wry smile. “I’m sure it was because you liked the clothes.”
