What the Prince said to Anne Reid

Actress Anne Reid ditched her usual “skirts and cardigans” housewife roles — her description of them — to don a glittering black dress to perform her one-woman show at Crazy Coqs in Piccadilly last night. But would Prince Philip have approved?

Reid, who was most recently in the Bafta-winning Last Tango in Halifax, related an encounter with Prince Philip who, with the Queen, had seen her on stage in Romeo and Juliet a few years ago.

“We met after the show and he said, ‘What are you doing next?’ I said I thought I’d like to try doing cabaret. He looked at me like I was a fallen woman. ‘Cabaret?’ he asked. ‘Good heavens. Why on earth would you want to do that?’ And he walked away. I think he thought I was going into stripping.”
