Will Grandpa Tony make Euan’s big day?

25 June 2013

Tony Blair’s son Euan is getting hitched in September — Saturday 14 being the day he weds his fiancée Suzanne Ashman at the Blairs’ country pile in Wotton Underwood in Buckinghamshire. The former PM’s father-in-law, Tony Booth, has been invited to the nuptials but will the veteran actor actually go? Booth is frail, according to a friend.

The Londoner learns that when the old Labour warhorse (Booth, that is, not Blair) and his fourth wife Stephanie manage to get to Wotton Underwood the younger Tony is increasingly often abroad, given his lecturing commitments and Middle East peace envoy duties.

While Booth, best known as the “Scouse git” on BBC TV’s Till Death Us Do Part, has publicly supported his son-in-law, he marched against the Iraq War and was openly critical of New Labour in government. So let’s hope they can patch up any old misunderstandings before the happy day.

It is an open secret in Labour circles that Euan, 29, has political ambitions. He is a business development manager at Coventry-based Sarina Russo Job Access, part of the Government’s Work Programme. Labour insiders think he is in the Midlands because he has his eye on the Labour seat of Coventry North West, which may be vacated by Geoffrey Robinson in 2015.

Booth missed Tony and Cherie’s wedding in 1980 because he fell off a roof during a drunken spree. He is known to have a soft spot for his grandson, who was found in Leicester Square after a drop too many a few years ago.
