The Mayor has made the right decision in instructing Lambeth council to deny planning permission for three tower blocks in Waterloo. The office and residential towers, the tallest of which would have been 33 storeys high, were ugly and would have spoilt views of the South Bank. Mr Johnson should not rule out any future development of the site. The existing office building there may be lower but it is ugly: redeveloping it could contribute to the area's regeneration. But it is heartening to see Mr Johnson delivering on a key election pledge to save London's skyline.
