Every major park in London will get a free-to-use open-air gym under plans launched by mayoral hopeful Tessa Jowell to make the city “healthier and happier”.

The former Olympics minister wants to get more Londoners fit by offering workouts at 100 more recreation grounds and play areas across the capital.

Ms Jowell, 67, a keen runner and gym user, said just 36 per cent of Londoners took part in sport at least once a week.

“London is the home of sport,” she said. “We have just hosted the greatest Olympics of all time and we present more elite competition than any other city on the planet — but we’re still not doing enough to help Londoners participate themselves.

“We all want to be fitter, healthier and happier, so we have to tear down the barriers that stop Londoners joining in.”

Outdoor gyms have appeared in 83 London parks in recent years.

A typical installation costs around £27,500, but Ms Jowell says the £2.75 million cost could be raised through corporate sponsorship.

“No one should be priced out of keeping fit,” said Ms Jowell.
